The Girls: "Gaslighter"
The Chicks released "Gaslighter," the title track from their first album in 14 years, on March 4, just before 2020 goes up in flames. Its rousing chorus and Natalie Maines' post-divorce barbs make the song instantly satisfying, a dose of the band's well-known rousing humor served up with the reassurance that they were ready for the moment after so long. Maine's admission of her vulnerability only further roots her rallying cries in her humanity, speaking with a fair channel of anger, sadness, and confusion about the pain of a relationship gone to hell. Gas Lighter Ointment is easy to apply to almost any wound, whether it's from an ex-husband's misconduct on a boat or otherwise. -Allison Hussey

Charli XCX: "Forever"
Written and recorded in self-isolation at her Los Angeles home, under the pressure of a self-imposed May deadline, Charli XCX's albumhow i feel nowIt already looks like a relic from another era. The album's lead single, the soaring, heartfelt "Forever," perfectly captured the mood of early quarantine: the song is vulnerable and genuine, finding Charli expressing her feelings with surprising clarity and candor. "I'll love you forever," he swears over an avalanche of glittering synths, "even if we're not together." It's a moving testament to a romance that means everything now, even if it eventually fades away. swamp -calum

Bad Bunny: „Yo Perreo Sola“
As a genre, dance and movement, Perreo has always been about power. And with Yo Perreo Sola, Bad Bunny delivers a consensus-based memoir that focuses on a woman's independence on the dance floor. The video even features the superstar wearing the song's narrator's chains, latex, and tall boots, as it shows a genuine desire to play with gender expression in a genre that is too often aimed at the male gaze. But 'Yo Perreo Sola' also repeated the reggaeton of a lifetimemeetingrelegate female singers to anonymity; Puerto Rican rapper Nesi, who sings its chorus with passionate moves, was uncredited when the song was released. The oversight was later corrected with a remix that featured her (this time with a credit) on the side.pioneerIvy Queen - whose legendary "Quiero Bailar" defined the terms for this song - provides justification for Cavallotas who just want to dance in peace. – Stefanie Fernandez

Burna Boy: "Onyeka (Baby)"
No man is a complete movement. But Burna Boy, who released an album with an ambitious titleafrican giantlast year and then doubled down on its promise with the 2020stwice bigger- made a career out of persuasively asking to be different. "Onyeka (Baby)" is a sunny, indestructibly sweet moment amidst a colossal album of dancehall, afrobeats and pop, another of SĂsifo de Burna's efforts to condense the breadth of Pan-Africanism into his persona. No artist since Fela Kuti has so vigorously fused the continent's contradictions, torments and triumphs. -Mina Tavakoli

City Girls: „Pussy Talk“ [ft. Doja-Katze]
Yung Miami and JT from City Girls are gold standard shit talkers. That's what makes their music so fun to listen to, and on "Pussy Talk" they're at their best, including Doja Cat in a rundown of all the things your pussies want, can't, or won't do. I do not want to tolerate. When viewed as part of an exciting trilogy, with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP" and Meg's "Don't Stop" serving as grand finales, "Pussy Talk" becomes even better. In 2016, the 45th president nearly becamespoiledthe word, but now, with her reign over, Pussy can spend the rest of the 2020s reclaiming her identity. According to City Girls, she is multitalented, multilingual ("English, Spanish and French"), wealthy, sophisticated, and in complete control. –Allison P. Davis

Radio Porridge: "Sweet"
"Sweet" is a character study of a woman on the verge of madness. Porridge Radio frontwoman Dana Margolin sings like her heart is on fire, delivering lines with an almost savage bravado. As the narrator bites her nails and dodges a mother's concerned comments, the music oscillates between edgy, thin post-punk and bursts of metallic distortion. The music illustrates Sisyphus' task of feeling better: every time he reaches a certain level of stillness, the noise roars again. -Sophie Kemp

Destroyer: "Synthesizer Cue"
Like so many Destroyer songs before it, "Cue Synthesizer" is a grim vision of a decrepit world, led by a tour guide who can barely stand the sight. "I've been to America, I've been to Europe," Dan Bejar sings absently. "It's all the same shit." To accompany the trip, he commands a small headband: "Bring the drums / Cue fake drums", he sighs, but the royal entourage refuses to obey his orders. It's all a spooky vibe, groovy bass and canned snake-like electric guitar solos. The result feels slightly apocalyptic, oddly funny and timely. –Sam Sodomsky

Bfb Da Packman: „Free Joe Exotic“ [ft. Sada-baby]
There are few acceptable places to play Free Joe Exotic outside of your own headphones. In the stunning song, Bfb Da Packman, who grew up in Flint, Michigan, talks about how he'd rather jump off a bridge than wear a condom, turns the slogan Sour Patch Kids into a pun on oral sex, and blames a girl from Betrayal has a great story about the size of his crap: "She said she can feel it in her belly, stop shutting up / Old lie bitch, my dick ain't that big." Nick Hakim: "QADIR"
Nick Hakim's tribute to a late childhood friend shines in detail. Firm but eager congas, a smooth flute and bright keys merge into a moving plea for a kinder world. Like walking through a room inhabited by the spirits of lost loved ones, "QADIR" is both calming and frightening. As the track builds to symphonic heights, Hakim's dusty timbre fades, ushering in a haunting 10-piece chorus giving in to a feeling words can no longer express. Like a life, "QADIR" resonates long after it ends. –Jessica Karisa

Haim: "Only I know"
"I Know Alone" may have been written before the pandemic, but its reflections on loneliness are particularly poignant in a year when almost everyone has been forced to live a life of glorified seclusion. The song is a groggy anthem for those days when counting the dots on the ceiling can be a lot of work. “Nights turn to days that turn to ash, they keep turning,” Danielle Haim sings in quiet desperation. The melancholy bassline provides a melody to curl up in and reflect on, while the uptempo tempo near the end is a reminder that loneliness ends too. —Dayna Evans
